Storytelling

The storytelling workshops are practical and work on specific points of this art method, from preparation steps to narratives presentation. It covers the storyteller’s work in the classroom, and tales sessions and/or shows for the most diverse public, from children to adults. The three modules are independent and complementary to each other.

MODULE I - APPROXIMATION STRATEGIES OF THE WRITTEN TEXT FOR STORYTELLING

This module suggests a practical study on written texts (literary stories, folktales, fables, poems, among others) with the intention of preparing people for storytelling. We conduct individual and collective exercises to create a guiding structure of the text, as well as for conducting referential surveys and the storyboarding of stories. The workshop assists on the search for the storie’s key points, interpretation, memorization and developing creative capabilities of the storyteller.

Hour load: 3 hours
Target audience: teachers, storytellers and interested public with or without experience
Requirements: bring a folk tale in writing, from 1 to 2 pages maximum

MODULE II - PRINCIPLES, STRATEGIES AND STORYTELLING DEVICES

This module presents three guiding instances for storytelling: principles, strategies and devices. The principles represent a set of fundamental propositions and guidelines that serve as ethical, political and philosophical basis of what moves the storyteller on their craft’s exercise; the strategies are notions that lead clear objectives to key storytelling moments (such as warm up, creation of a sense of community, and story visualization, for example); and the devices are actions the storyteller uses to reach the goals determined in the strategies, such as the use of songs, percussion, gestures, questions, among others. The workshop contributes to the storyteller’s technical support, as well as for the development of their artistic and pedagogical skills.

Hour load: 3 hours
Target audience: people with experience or who concluded Module I

MODULE III - USING THE VIEWPOINTS TECHNIQUE APPLIED TO STORYTELLING

This module presents the artistic creation and composition technique Viewpoints (systematized by the American directors Anne Bogart and Tina Landau) as a creative support for storytelling. We carry out exercises of time and space viewpoints (tempo, duration, kinesthetic response, repetition; spatial relation, topography, shape, gesture and architecture) in order to broaden the possibilities and perspectives of the storyteller in relation to the artistic-pedagogical exercise of the narratives in storytelling.

Hour load: 3 hours
Target audience: people with experience or who concluded Module I
